Jazz-funk-R&B-pop trumpeter. Lamkin earned a Masters in Music Education at Morgan State University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education at The University of Maryland College Park. He taught music and was band director at Edmondson High School, University of Maryland Eastern Shore where he was very active in all the music programs over his 30-year tenure, later taught at Bill’s Music House. He has earned numerous prestigious awards for his work. He has performed with Zim Zemarel Orchestra, Hank Levy Legacy Orchestra, Whit Williams Big Band, Peabody Jazz Ensemble… Natural Gas, Carlos Johnson’s Zone 1, Luther Ingram’s Unit Truth (performed at the 1972 Wattstax concert in L.A.), Chain Reaction… In the ‘00s John leads his Favorites Jazz Quintet, and Sacred Jazz Quintet.

In 1984 he released his first album “Hot” on G.M.I. Records that featured his wife Eartha Lamkin on vocals, with backing band of many of the area’s best musicians.
