This trio, consisting of Nancy Andrews, Elizabeth Downing, and Michael Willis took Baltimore’s arts community by surprise in 1987 with their quirky take on Appalachian-sounding folk music and their surreal costumes. City Paper writer Bret McCabe described them as “country/folk tinted chamber pop.”
Guitarist Jonathan Gorrie was added in 1990, after the release of the band’s debut album “Lamby Cake” (Merkin), and booked an appearance on David Letterman.
They frequented Eight by Ten, and played such prestigious venues as the Whitney Museum in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. Their song “Serpentine” appears on the 1989 Merkin comp Seedy Sampler.
Andrews left and formed Pinky. Gorrie went on to play in Dixie Hiway Band and The Bobwhites. He passed away in 2008. Downing and Willis continued working together in various incarnations (Radiant Pig, 3 Pigs Café, Daily Grace, Lurch and Holler). Radiant Pig released 2002 CD “Daily Grace.”
Liz Downing later collaborated with Rupert Wondolowski releasing two CDs in 2020’s as Mole Suit Choir.
