Flink Johnson’s Combo could be seen at the Avenue Cafe in the early ‘50s.

The group consisted of Flink on piano and vocals, Charlie Fletcher (bass), Joe Adams (drums ex-Royal Theater house band), and ‘Pigmeat’ on sax (see Pigmeat & his Combo). Other members included Ray Montague (guitar), Don Oliver (sax), and Harold White (drums)…

Pigmeat, also a member of Tracy McCleary’s Royal Men of Rhythm, left the band around 1955 and started his own combo. He was replaced with Baltimore sax legend Mickey Fields (see bio). The Combo played house band stints at Chick’s, the Carnival Club, the Spot Bar. By the late ‘50s Paul Brown played bass, and Roy Tribble was the drummer.

Fields later rejoined the Tilters. Montague, Oliver, and White later joined the Big Toppers…
