The 4 Notes consisted of vocalist Gene Smith (formerly toured with the Mills Brothers) along with Ted Queen (tenor sax, vocal), Roy Magee (guitar), and Earl Thomas (piano).
They released a single in 1952 “I Didn’t Mean to Be So Mean” b/w “Wicked City Woman.” Songs written by Howard Marks.


The 4 Notes could be seen at the Blue Mirror, Chick’s Show Bar, Lee’s Musical Bar, and the Flamingo Musical Bar. During the later ‘50s they appeared frequently as house band at the Carnival Club. Smith also performed at the Club Ambassador with Paul Brown (bass), and Roosevelt Wardell (piano).
In the ‘60s Smith was featured with the Vince Dipaula Orchestra.
