The musical brainchild of Baltimore native and multi-instrumentalist Snackie Hillman (guitar ex-Beatoes). While living briefly in Seattle, Hillman created a demo of his original compositions titled “Pornflakes – They’re Not Just for Breakfast Anymore.” Returning to Baltimore in 1991 he formed a new group consisting of Augie Buchheit (drums), Charleigh Chadwick (bass), and Berkeley Savage (lead guitar). Buchheit had also formerly been a member of the Beatoes.
The group played at The Rage on Calvert Street, Hour Haus, Eight by Ten, Max’s on Broadway, and stints as house band at the 14 K Kabaret where they produced their own live version of The Gong Show featuring many diverse participants. The group also traveled to New York and performed at CBGB’s.
The group went through many personnel changes in early ‘90s. In 1991 they added Ron Ray (trumpet). Savage left to join Uprising and was replaced with ex-Chaz guitarist ‘Crash.’ 1992 saw the addition of Leonard Mayfield (trumpet), and Mark Harp (guitar, keyboards). This lineup released the album “Turn Off That Television” (Hat Factory). The song “Goddamn” (featuring Skizz on drums) was included on the 1993 comp “Baltimore, The City That Breeds” (Reptilian Records). The following year they released a split single featuring their song “Coffee” backed with Cloaca’s song “Diggin’ in That Bag” (Hat Factory Records). Pornflakes also had two songs “8142,” and “No End” featured on the 1994 comp “Smirk, Titter & Wink” (Crank 004).
More changes took place over the next couple of years as Ray left, and they added John Partridge (sax), Todd ‘Chutzie’ Hulslander (trombone), and Miyuki Furtado (percussion ex-Jags).
Their self-titled album “Pornflakes” was released in late 1993. Chadwick was next to depart in 1994 and was replaced with Barry Hampton (bass ex-All Mighty Senators).
This lineup recorded at the Peabody Conservatory studio, and with some additional home tapes, released the album “Naked”.
Continuing changes had Harp and Hulslander leaving. Furtado began playing guitar, and Steve Miller (trombone) was added to the lineup.
In 1995 they released what was to be their final album “Love.” Their song “It Sure Looks Different” was included on the 1995 Baltimore alternative music comp “Walking by A Building” (Hat Factory).
Furtado left to form the group Gerty. The Pornflakes continued to perform including opening a show for the All Mighty Senators at Hammerjacks. After an ill-fated eastern U.S. tour in 1996 the group decided to call it quits.
Hillman went on to the Swingin’ Swamis who released recordings including the 2002 CD “Songs and Other Misdemeanors…” (Lube Records).
