Southern Carroll County teen rock band played originals and covers.

Members included Mickey Gaither (guitar), Steve Bacon (drums), and Bryan Cook (guitar). Bruce Fusselbaugh was drummer for a while. In mid-’68 the group added bass guitarist Richard Taylor, and lead vocalist Dan McDougall.

Gaither recalled that “It was only during the Rich (Taylor) era that the Getches made a stab at being a real, play-for-at-least-a-little-bit-of-money band as opposed to a garage band and excuse for a party. We played an impromptu intermission for the Vertations at the Movie House in Westminster in February 1969 and one of them told us we showed them up, though I doubt this was true. Another memorable moment was when we somehow played a gig there on our own and decided to replicate the then-recent onstage pie fights of the Jefferson Airplane, using pies made of shaving cream. Westminster was largely redneck back then and hardly ready for Jefferson Airplane covers much less all this… One large, intimidating, and irate attendee afterward demanded (successfully) that drummer Steve Bacon clean the cream off his shoes!”

Taylor, McDougall, and Cook were later nucleus of the band Rock in 1968, while Gaither went on to (Charon’s) Boat. Taylor and McDougall shared a long musical relationship appearing in numerous bands together throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s including Alabark and Zehn Archar.
