The Prophet and His Disciples were formed in 1964 at the University of Maryland College Park by several guys all living in the same campus dormitory who had played in various hometown bands in high school. By happenstance one night they ended up talking at a dorm function and discovered that between them they had the right blend of instrumentation and vocals to start a band. While bass players varied throughout the years, the group was anchored by:
Mike Holden (Lead Vocals and Front Man), Chuck Frohlich (Drums), Paul Wingo (Lead Guitar), Chip Messick (Rhythm Guitar), Neil Kavenaugh (Bass)

Throughout the next four years until they graduated, The Prophet and His Disciples became one of the most popular bands in the local area, playing every weekend throughout Washinton DC, the DC suburbs, and College Park. They were a mainstay at college fraternity and sorority parties, were house band at the Varsity Grille on Wednesday evenings, and played in venues at other schools like Princeton University. The breadth of their jobs covered everything from small bars to the Washington Press Correspondents Dinner where they supplied the rock music between the big band “standards.” Playing Top Forty music of the times, they covered songs from Motown, Righteous Brothers, Beatles, etc. The members all went their separate ways in 1968, but continued to play in groups where their jobs took them.
