Renowned jazz bass guitarist. He began playing as a teenager in local combos including the rock band Meat. Wright moved to San Francisco in the mid-’70s where he played for Don & the Sunsets. The group toured and opened for many national acts.
His album releases include “Fresh Focus” in 1993 featuring session work by some of the area’s top local artists including Carl Filipiak (guitar), Charlie Etzel, and George Spicka (keyboards), Larry Bright (bass), Robert Dupree (percussion), Mack Rucks (trumpet)… The CD “Comin’ At Ya” (Knee Deep 13965) in 1995 as the Kenny Wright Experience – featuring some fine local musicians including David Smith (sax ex-Essence, O’Donel Levy Band), Ralph ‘Boo’ Magwood (vocals -Both Worlds), Wendell Shepherd (brass ex-The Grand Jury, P-Funk), Charlie Etzel (keyboards), Roderick Johnson and Bobby Ward (drums), Vince Mozzitti and Dave Cosby (guitars). In 1999 he released “Bottle of Wine” as Kenny Wright & Fresh Groove. Wright’s group appeared at the local Artscape Festivals in the ‘90s. His ‘00s band Fresh Groove toured with and/or opened for Kim Waters, Gladys Knight, Walter Beasley, and others…
