While in the Army during the early ‘50s Wells was stationed with Sergeant Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderly. They took part in company jams with Wells playing the piano, eventually he bought a set of vibes. Upon returning to Baltimore Wells attended the Peabody Conservatory. He went on to become a talented jazz musician seen in the early years at the Fulton Bar. Jimmy later played with the Continentals, and Hank Levy’s jazz band.
In the ‘70s Jimmy Wells and his group performed as house band at the Playboy Club, also seen at the V.I.P. Lounge, Blues Back Alley, the Tijuana Taco, the Closet… Members included Jimmy Johnson (drums), Phil Harris (bass), Ray Kitz (tenor sax), and Reppard Stone (trombone)…
His 1973 jazz album featured Roy McCoy (trumpet), Rep Stone (trombone), Thomas Williams (sax), Mickey Fields (sax), Donald Bailey (bass), Ted Hawke (drums), Freddie Thaxton (piano), Hugh Wallker (drums), and Donald Swarts (guitar). Produced by Wells and George Massenburg.

In the ‘80s Wells became Maryland Public Television Music Director.
Jimmy Wells & his group Friends performed locally in the ‘00s. He also did studio work with Moe Daniels at Swing City Records. Wells passed away in 2004.
