Wells started his broadcasting career at WITH in the late 1940s. His overnight program ‘We’re at The Copa, Where Are You?’ aired live from the Copa Club on East Baltimore Street in the 1950s. Local musicians would finish their gigs and head to the Copa for the after-hours show. Jack’s 1950 composition “Spin a Record for Me” was recorded by Benny Goodman (Capitol 828), and became a theme song for many disc jockeys across the country. The song was later recorded locally by Tommy Panto & the Marveleers.

Wells became the first FM radio announcer in Baltimore. In the late ‘50s he was host of ‘The Jack Wells Show’ TV program on channel 13 which showcased local talent. His show ‘Playboy’s Penthouse’ on WJZ-TV Saturday nights at 10:00 featured interviews with celebrities along with local band appearances. The Harry Wentworth Combo was the main band for the show. Saxophonist Wentworth went on to play with the Charlie Barnett and Stan Kenton Orchestras.
