Al Jones, veteran bluegrass musician played throughout Baltimore, D.C., Virginia, Northeast Maryland was originally from Virginia. With Don Stover he played at Lindy’s 79 Club on Cross Street in the ‘50s. The circle of musicians who performed there formed Earl Taylor’s Band and played full time in the late ‘50s. Jones and Necessary (banjo player originally from Kentucky) got together and formed a bluegrass band in the mid-‘60s called the Spruce Mountain Boys along with Billy Baker (fiddle ex-Shady Valley Boys), and James Thomas (bass player from Monkton, MD). Necessary joined Ohio group the Stone Mountain Boys and toured nationally, returning to Baltimore area in mid-’70s and re-forming Spruce Mountain Boys with Jones.
