Blues guitarist/vocalist William ‘Red’ Jones originally from Portsmouth Norfolk VA area. Traveled to New York where he met and learned from blues legends Mississippi John Hurt and Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup. His travels led him to Baltimore where he performed regularly at the Full Moon Saloon in Fells Point for over 25 years. Maryland Musician magazine writer and fellow Baltimore Blues Society member Larry Benicewicz described Red’s playing as “unmatched in the area. His roots run deep and stretch back far in time.”
Known as ‘Baltimore Red,’ Jones worked with harmonica virtuoso Choo Choo Charlie Williams. The duo was winner of the Summer 1991 Baltimore Blues Society regional blues contest. They released a blues cassette in 1994 titled “Rendezvous Ragtime.” Williams and Jones also released a CD in 1999 titled “Gutbucket Blues” that featured authentic sounding covers of pre-war style acoustic blues featuring Red’s finger picking and slide. His song “Charm City Swing” was included on the 2003 comp Baltimore on Tap (La Chica Records).
Williams (see bio) was also with Loaded Roller, The Spitfires, Rich Chorne’ All Stars…
