Jazz saxophonist originally from Philadelphia where he and his brother Earl formed a group called The Visitors and collaborated on a series of albums in the ’70s.

Carl moved to Baltimore around 1980. With a grant from The N.E.A. he organized concerts at the Light Street Pavilion, and numerous jazz workshops with prominent local musicians. His Jazz Workshop Band performed throughout the area at schools, museums, and clubs.

With his own band and as a member of Julius Hemphill Saxophone group he toured nationally and worldwide.

He has been band director and teacher at St. Paul’s School (Brooklandville), Friends School, Bernard Harris Elementary…

Grubbs has received numerous honors and awards including the Mary Sawyer Baker Award from The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.
