Classical and jazz bassist originally from Virginia, graduated from Peabody Conservatory and performed at jazz clubs in Baltimore. Known early in his career as Gene Byrd, he joined his brother’s Charlie Byrd Trio in 1963. The Trio toured worldwide while also performing in clubs throughout Maryland, Virginia, and D.C.
In 1977 he began a stint at King of France Tavern of the Maryland Inn (Annapolis) that lasted well into the ‘00s. Joe performed and recorded with the group Great Guitars consisting of Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and drummer Johnny Rae. They released recordings on Concord Records. Joe also led his own Trio that played many clubs in the Annapolis area.
