The Black Watch was active in the Harford County and Baltimore area including teen centers, CYO’s, and other venues from 1967 through the mid-70’s. Members included John Bova (lead guitar), Dave Dilworth (rhythm guitar), Ralph Blake (bass), Charlie Boyd (organ), Rick Panzer (drums), and Mike Dilworth (lead vocals).
The group played at John Carroll School in Bel Air at the first “Rock n’ Roll Mass” in 1968. They also were featured on the Kerby Scott TV show in 1968, and performed the songs “Lou, I Love You,” and “On Broadway,” from their records produced by Bradley Studios.
They were also featured at Kerby Scott’s San Francisco Psychedelic Light Show at the Bel Air Armory in 1967.
The group was a mainstay at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Edgewood Arsenal where they performed regularly at the Officer’s Clubs, NCO Clubs, Rathskeller, and Teen Town.
In a Baltimore Battle of the Bands in 1969 (date forgotten) the group came in 7th among 40 groups at the Eastwind on Pulaski Highway.
Others who performed with the group at various times were Jimmy Carr on bass and horns, Bob MacBlane on guitar, Ru Thompson on guitar, Dennis Longo and Tony Heiberger on drums, Andy Pastelak and Jimmy Bailey on horns and Tom Golding on percussion (as well as band manager for a time). Frank Cook also managed the band in the early 70s.
In more recent years Dave played guitar, percussion and vocals with The Infidel Castros from 2011 to 2018, with Ann Castro on vocals, Daisy Castro on violin, viola, cello, and Joe Castro on guitar and percussion.
He also appeared regularly at the Wagon Shed open mic nights in New Freedom, Pennsylvania.
In 2014 he recorded two CDs of cover tunes, “Dim and Torn Up” and “Tossed” as Dave Dilworth & the Corroborators featuring all members of the Infidel Castros as well as David Goodrich on guitar, banjo, diddley bow and keyboards, Gale Jamieson on udu and djembe, Jim Whiting on guitar and backing vocals, Peter Mulvey on backing vocals, Robert Stanley on bass, and Joe Meo on saxophone and flute and Mark Thayer on percussion.
Dave also played guitar with Will Play For Fish – a Baltimore old time music group that featured Amy Hopkins and Ann Boss on fiddles, Lisa Roberts on banjo and fiddle, and Tom Reedy on guitar. The late Fred Crouse also played banjo with them for a few years. Others who joined in from time to time included Charlie Stagmer on bass, and Nathan Hamidi on accordion.
Stagmer’s other bands included Cabbage, and Foster Peacock. Bova also with Autumn, Phly, and Endless Express, among others.
