Led by pianist Rivers Chambers, former leader of the Royal Theater house band. The dance band / society band performed for many formal affairs and high school proms. Seen at Forest Park, Overlea, Glyndon VFD…

The group employed many members over the years including guitarist Billy Mackel (ex-Three Strikes and A Miss) who left in 1944 to join Lionel Hampton’s band (1944-78). He recorded with Gladys Hampton’s Quartet “For Squares Only” b/w “Star Time” (Hamp-Tone 105).  The group also included Charlie Harris (see bio). As a member of the Hamptone All Stars Mackel performed and recorded with many top jazz musicians including Milt Buckner, Arnett Cobb, Herbie Fields, Wynonie Harris, Earl Hines, and many others. Mackel released a solo LP in 1977 “Billy Mackel…At Last” (Black & Blue 117) and sat in with Chamber’s Orchestra until the group disbanded in the early ‘80s. Roy McCoy (trumpet) also played for the original Ink Spots, Tracy McCleary’s band at the Royal Theater, Gene Walker’s Big Band, and many nationally known artists. He also did studio work for Moe Daniels and Swing City Records up until he passed away in 2002. Bassist Jay Leonhart (Pier 5 Dixie Band) was also a member.
