R&B vocal group formed at Morgan State University.
Harlem, New York natives Larry Mizzell and Fonce Mizzell attended high school in Englewood, New Jersey where they became friends with Freddie Perren. The three later attended college at Howard University in D.C. In 1961 they formed an R&B/jazz vocal group called the Vanlords that included fellow students John Butler and Donny Hathaway (piano). The Vanlords performed at many Howard University talent contests.
While still in college the Mizell’s and Perren formed their own record label called Hog. They recruited a group from Morgan State University in Baltimore and named them the Moments. Accompanied with a string section hired from the Air Force, the Moments recorded two sides that were the Hog label’s lone record release.
The Mizell’s and Perren went on to become legends as writers/producers working for Motown (Jobette Music, Jackson 5, Gladys Knight…) and later working with artists such as Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Gary Bartz, A Taste of Honey, L.T.D., and others.
