The Rhapsody Club from The Upsetters album

[A memory of the Rhapsody Club from Michael Hoyt (Feb.2021).] There was a small dressing room adjacent to the stage. When we [The Oxfords] played there in 1968 or 1969 it had autographed pictures of Bo Diddley and Otis Redding hanging on the wall. We were suitably impressed. Clay Hunt (who I believe is still performing in Anne Arundel County) and The Princetons were the house band there for a long time in the late ’60s.

[Joe Vaccarino] Worked at The Rhapsody a time or two. Many of the top local bands performed there including The Upsetters who earned a gig touring as Otis Redding’s band. They released a couple of albums including one on the Rhapsody record label. They also released an album and singles on ABC Records. If you can find any of those records they are well worth picking up.

[Richard Beckett] The club was destroyed by fire. I played there in the late 60’s with a band called the Vibrations. At the time Jimmy West and the Upsetters, the Verdicts and Paper Cup are some of the other bands that performed there.

The site of the club was vacant for many years. Now it is the site of Cravin’ Crabs on B&A Blvd near the Baltimore/Anne Arundel County line.
