Rock group formed January 1976 with Ellsworth Hall (keyboards, vocals), Ken Dearth (bass) and Denny Dearth (vocals), Mike Mercer (rhythm guitar), Jay Wise (lead guitar, who was later in Quikfire in the 80s), and Brian Powell (drums). Mark Van Natta and Bill Myers (who’d played with Tim Fields earlier in the ‘70s) replaced Mike and Ken in mid-1977.
Tailwynd played lounges, festivals, parties, high school dances, Sheppard Pratt, Traveler’s Lounge, and sometimes opened for Paper Cup at the Flaming Pit in Timonium. Ellsworth (later of Sabre, Affinity, Logos…) recalled “I think Tailwynd’s claim to history was that when we were the house band at Traveler’s Lounge in Dundalk, we did a gig away at Hollywood Palace on Rt. 40. Our substitute at Traveler’s was none other than Kix. We went and saw them after our show and their keyboard player said, “‘Tailwynd, what is that, some kind of fart?’ Ah, memories!”
Tailwynd morphed into Sabre in early 1978.
