From Susan Kennedy: “Our band, The Stardells were together for 19 years and played in the Baltimore area and all surrounding areas of Maryland.”

“The Stardells Formed in the mid-1970s by Bill Kennedy, The Stardells quickly became one of the Baltimore region’s premier country bands, known for their tight harmonies, dynamic stage presence, and authentic country sound. Over the course of nearly two decades, they became a staple of the Mid-Atlantic music scene, performing everywhere from local fairs to major venues and earning a loyal following wherever they went. The Stardells brought a professional polish to every show while staying true to their down-home roots, blending classic country influences with a distinctive Baltimore edge.”

“In 1983, The Stardells gained national recognition when they won the Dodge Wrangler Country Showdown – the most prestigious country music competition of its time. Their success in the Showdown led to one of their proudest moments: an appearance on the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage, where they represented Maryland with pride.”

“For six consecutive years, The Stardells served as the official opening act at the Painters Mill Theatre, sharing the stage with some of country music’s biggest stars (George Jones, Ronnie Milsap, Hank Jr., Mel Tillis, and many more) as they came through town. Their reputation for professionalism and crowd-pleasing performances made them a favorite among fans and touring artists alike. Throughout their career, The Stardells performed at numerous venues and events across the region – including Kings Dominion in Virginia, local fairs, and regional festivals – leaving behind a legacy defined by dedication, musicianship, and the enduring spirit of Maryland country music.”

“The band’s lineup featured Bill Kennedy, Paul Huffmaster, Joe Leake, Dave Peddicord, John Talbott, and Jeff Streif. Together, they defined the Stardells’ signature sound and built a loyal following that still remembers their energy and heart. The group remained active until 1992, when founding member Bill Kennedy moved to Florida, marking the end of an era for Baltimore’s beloved country ambassadors.”

The Stardells were inducted in the Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame in November 2025.

Stepp also led bands the Enterprise 3, and Starfleet Command.
