Guitarist-vocalist, played with the Rockin’ Airs. In mid-’60s he began playing country music, going on to lead one of the most popular country bands in Baltimore. Nicely and his band operated primarily from Club Stabiles in Highlandtown.
Dave was married to the band’s female singer Sharon Lee, winner of WBMD 1965 Country Music Talent Round-Up. A lot of musicians circulated in and out of the band, but the steel guitar player Calvin Deitz, who doubled on saxophone, was a mainstay. For several years Bobby Godsey was the main lead guitar player. Godsey, who could just as easily be described as a freelancer, actually came to prominence with the Triumphs, a rock and roll band playing in one of the popular Glen Burnie night clubs, then had worked with Ernie West. After he worked for Dave Nicely a couple of years, he became leader of Stabile’s house band 301 Country, and eventually went on to tour with the Jimmy Case Show.
Dave and Sharon went to Nashville, then in ‘70s played regularly in Lebanon, PA area clubs. Nicely also fronted the local groups Mod Country, and 301 Country.
