Formed at Morgan State University, the Mo-Bops were one of the earliest ‘Be-Bop’ jazz groups in Baltimore – modeled after stars Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon… Their name Mo (from Morgan) and Bop (from Be-Bop). Members included Henry Baker (tenor sax), Walt Dickerson (vibraphone), ‘Mousie’ Johnson (trumpet), Claude Hubbard (piano), Don Bailey (bass), and Donald Lee (drums). Other members included Joe Blair (piano), Freddie Thaxton (piano), Monty Poulson (bass), and Phil Harris (bass).
