R&B group from East Baltimore. The Independent Black Men in Song (IBM’s) featured many members over its storied history including vocalists Charles Simms, Raynard Chance, Timothy Capers, Roland ‘Bunky’ Campbell, and Wayne Jones, with rhythm section including Johnny Creadle (guitar), David Price (guitar), James Bethea (guitar), Dino Marrison (regarded by many fellow musicians as “the baddest bass player in town” ex-Collections & Civics), Steven Jones (keyboards), Moe Daniels (keyboards), Jerry Scott (percussion)… A young pre-teen drummer named Dennis Chambers was brought into the group by Lee Rodrick. Danny Rogers aka ‘Chubby’ also played drums for the IBM’s.
The IBM’s performed at many cabaret halls, Ambassador Ballroom, Famous Ballroom, Alcazar, Peyton Place… They were part of a package show at the Embassy Room with Al Green, Jimmy Castor, Softones, and Young Vandals. They also performed on the “North Star” television program.
The group had several managers including Chuck Purvis.
