Self-described as “surf-garage-mod-bug music,” this retro-‘60s style rock group formed in 1994, with Dave McDonough and Pat Core on guitar and vocals, Frankentractor’s Paul Kelley on bass, and Skizz Cyzyk (see Skizz) on drums, playing covers and originals of mostly surf instrumentals and 60s-style garage rock. Kelly left in 1995, and was replaced by his Frankentractor bandmate Jay Schlosberg. Schlosberg left in 1996 and was briefly replaced by an Irish illegal immigrant whose name no one in the band remembers, before Cyzyk’s Berserk bandmate Big Dave Cawley permanently took over the bass duties. Pat Core relocated to Hawaii in 2001, and was replaced by Cyzyk’s Jennifers bandmate John Irvine.
Garage Sale’s original songs have appeared on several comps: “Change The Styles” on 1996 You Say When CD “Listener Supported”; “Exercise One” on 1996 Joy Division tribute; “One More Time” on 1997 RPM Records’ “Fuzzy Logic”; “Flight of the Emu” on 1998 Dizzy Records’ “Shot Putting In An Empty Stadium”; “Space Tour One: Mars” on 1999 Dizzy Records’ “Day Dreaming With An Empty Station Wagon”; and “Buck Hill” on 2000 Face Down Records’ “Left Of The Dial” Replacements tribute CD.
The band has frequented Memory Lane, Club Midnight, the Atomic BBQ, the Hon Bar, Café Tattoo, Hon Fest, Hampdenfest, The Flamingo Lounge, The Mansion Theater, Ottobar, Talking Head, the Intertribal Pow Wow, the SoWeBo Arts Fest, and Frazier’s On the Avenue.
Kelley went on to play with Gill, and Walker & Jay. Skizz was later with The Jennifers, ans The Awkward Sounds of Scott & Skizz…
