88.9-FM Morgan State University station, an affiliate of NPR (National Public Radio) began broadcasting diversified programming in 1977. Format included Black Progressive and Jazz music. WEAA’s first program director was Kweisi Mfume. News director Larry Dean was a veteran of Baltimore radio stations WITH, WWIN, WEBB, and WLIF.
In 1999 WEAA was named “Best Jazz Station” by Gavin Magazine.
Sandi Mallory-Cooper, wife of musician Joe Cooper, was the first African-American woman to have her own radio show in Maryland, WEAA’s “Cool Vibes For Your Mid-Day”. She also worked at WXYV (V-103), WLIF. ‘Big Jim’ Staton was Music Director and hosted his own oldies show.
