Country and bluegrass group got its start in the Thurmont area of Frederick County. Originated as a duo of brothers Joe Brown (guitar, vocals), and Bob Brown (guitar, banjo) called The Catoctin Mountain Boys, later adding a drummer. The group grew to five pieces by 1985 when they released an album of their original songs. The album featured the Brown brothers along with Dave Lingg (guitar, vocals), Shane Swope (mandolin), and Gordon Connor (drums, percussion). Kit Russo provided the studio bass tracks.

The album garnered much airplay on local stations including WFMD, Frederick.

In the mid-‘80s the group became known as Catoctin, and played popular country music covers. By the mid-‘90s the group consisted of constants Joe (guitar, vocals) and Bob (bass, vocals), with Paul Hackley (lead guitar), and Gregg ‘Fuzz’ Toms (drums).

Catoctin preferred playing summer events such as fairs and carnivals as well as occasional night club gigs. They were also finalists’ multiple years in the Tru-Value Country Showdown.
