Founded in 1857 by George Peabody, the division of the Johns Hopkins University became an internationally acclaimed school where many musicians locally and abroad received formal training. The Peabody Conservatory of Music is a nationally accredited school that continues to provide musical training. Graduates are active in orchestras, arts organizations, and as teachers at all levels from pre-college through postgraduate education.

Some of the more famous alumni who were from or had residency status in Baltimore included Tori Amos, Michael Hedges (a composition student of Jean Eichelberger Ivey), and a young Frank Zappa’s brief orchestration tutorial with BSO conductor Massimo Freccia, who taught at the prep. Other world class musicians have been sought after as instructors at Peabody, including Leon Fleisher (piano), Daniel Heifetz (violin), Manuel Barrueco (guitar), Richard Aitken, Charles Covington, Gary Thomas, and American modernist composers Henry Cowell and Earl Browne…
