Family teen band from Chase, MD originally formed in 1970 as Frankie & the Insects. The group featured Sharon Starchak (vocals), Frank Starchak (guitar), and Mark Starchak (tambourine). Adding cousin Greg Sanzone (drums), the group became known as 2nd Cousins in 1971.
Their initial gig was a talent show at the Gardenville Rec Center. Managed by parents Frank and Jeannette Starchak, the group made a successful appearance as finalist on TV’s Showcase 13, and performed in Tony Grant’s Theatre Revue on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. From 1971-73 they were a Sunday house band at Ruggerio’s Restaurant, and performed for many private parties…The group mixed it up with oldies, standards, and Top-40 rock. They performed in the play “Oh! Baltimore” at the War Memorial Plaza, and live show at Memorial Stadium.
Sanzone left the group and Mark Starchak became the drummer. 2nd Cousins released an independent single on their own Starchak label “Am I Losing You / A Smile Will Make It Alright” b/w “The Way of Love” that they sold at their gigs.
Guitarist cousin Tommy Manning joined the group around 1974. Although he eventually left to join the 5th Avenue Band, the group continued to be known as 2nd Cousins. Sharon was later lead vocalist with Horizon. Frank later with Toyz.
