Vocalist Robert Ferguson aka ‘Bobby Starr’ fronted his local group Bobby Starr & the Versatiles.
In 1970 he joined the famous Philadelphia R&B group the Intruders replacing lead singer Sam ‘Little Sonny’ Brown. With the addition of Starr, the established group continued to produce a string of R&B and pop crossover hits on Gamble & Huff’s Gamble Records including “When We Get Married” (1970), and “(Win, Place or Draw) She’s a Winner” (1971). Little Sonny rejoined the group in 1973 and sang on their subsequent hits “I’ll Always Love My Mama” (1973), and “I Wanna Know Your Name” (1973).

Starr returned to Baltimore and led The Versatiles. They released a single on Ira Glover’s Soul House record label.

The original Intruders split up in 1975. Brown and Starr both later formed new versions of the Intruders. In the ‘00s the Intruders continued to make concert appearances accompanied with Bobby.
