Top-40 band from the Woodmoor / Catonsville area. The early line-up consisted of Jim Pizzillo (guitar), and Vince Lioi (lead vocals) both ex-Imported Shoes. The band also included Hugh McCusker (bass ex-Hypnotics), and Lou Tringali (drums). Lou was later replaced with drummer Tom Palacorolla (ex-Del Vinos). Sound of Dust played local clubs including house band stints at the Patapsco Inn and the Frigate.

“Dust” recorded a demo of “Inside Out” in 1968, a song written by V. Rudow

In the summer of 1972, the band submitted an entry to the locally sponsored ‘Pepsi Cola New Sounds’ jingle contest which was hosted by radio station WLPL. Of the 163 entries submitted only 25 bands were picked to record the 45 second commercial. 10 finalists were chosen. Listeners voted for their favorite version by turning in the bottle cap seals. When the dust settled, sorry for the pun… Sound of Dust was declared the winner.

The band went through a transformation in 1973 with Milt Herzing joining as the new drummer. Lioi had left the band and keyboard player Fred Leffler was added. Along with mainstays Pizillo and McCusker they could be heard at the Frigate in Glen Burnie and nightly at the Grogshop.

McCusker went on to join Nantucket. Leffler joined Phred, Pzazz.
