Group formed by ex-members of Van Go’s Ear: John Chriest (bass), Millie Landrum (keyboards), and Lou Frisino (drums), adding Greg Stinson (guitar), and Stacey Bernstein (overhead projector, design and visuals). Additional members sometimes included Sean McCaul (drums), Jenny McBrien (violin), Dave Fodel (keyboard), Cindie Landrum (vocals), and Mike Landrum (synthesizer, vocals).
Managed by Mark ‘Straz’ Strazza, The Melvyn performed originals (written by Chriest, Millie, and Stinson), and covers. Described by Millie as “neo-psychedelic… if you crossed post-1966 Beatles with the Butthole Surfers?” They were seen at the Marble Bar, Hourhaus, DC Space, The Loft, Galaxy Ballroom, Eight by Ten, Max’s on Broadway, Girard’s, Polish National Alliance Hall (to promote local compilation tape), and various warehouse shows and festivals throughout Baltimore and D.C. The Melvyn opened shows for Modern English, Ramones… and shared stages with local bands All Mighty Senators, Grey March, Reptile House, Thee Katatonix, Per Capita, Berserk, Lambs Eat Ivy, Laughing Tree, Black Cherry Puppet Theater, tENTATIVLY a cONVENIENCE, SubMensas, 21 Deaf Men, Ann Watts, Ardai…
The group was interviewed by Rod Meisy on WCVT, and were the subject of a feature article in the Baltimore Music Review by Mark Reeve.
The Melvyn released one 7” EP. Their song “Drawn Lines” (written by Millie Landrum) was included on the 1986 various artists album “Maryland Musicians for Music” (BFP 198657). “Up With the Lipp” (written by Chriest) was included on the 1988 album “Essential Attitudes Vol.III” (Refined 1001).
Chriest went on to join Lungfish. Stinson later with the SubMensas.
