Guitarist originally from Ellicott City, John moved away with his family and then later returned to the area to attend school. He played in the Wad and the D.C. based British Walkers briefly in 1967. After a stint in a D.C. group called the Chocolate Snowflake he moved on to New York where he formed the rock band Kangaroo who released an album on MGM. After many tours and recording sessions with some prominent musicians including Bonnie Raitt and Karen Dalton, he eventually met up with the musicians who would become known as Orleans. With Orleans they went on to have a successful career with such top hits as “Still the One” and “Reach.”

Hall embarked on a successful solo career in 1977.
Outside of music, Hall was a politician and member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
