Pop/rock and roll band from Milford Mill area. After the RaVons split up in early 1961, guitarist Carl Evans (Carl Burkowske) recalled “I began seeking out other musicians in an effort to start a new band. By spring I had joined with Donna Lucas (piano), Mick Benderoth (drums), Steve Benderoth (vocals, guitar), Jim Leslie (bass), and Ron Sechrist (sax ex-Londonaires) to form the Centaurs. From the beginning there was always a little friendly professional friction between Steve and I, but nothing more than that, as we knew this was only a temporary formation of convenience. I can only say we all wanted to be on Buddy Deane’s battle of the bands, and this was a way to achieve it. The Centaurs played a number of local teen centers/parties and were together but for a few months. After the Buddy Deane Show, most of us went our separate ways.”
The Centaurs also performed at Friedman’s Supper Club.


Carl and Donna went on to become founding members of the Sentries in early 1961… Leslie also played with the Lafayettes…
After graduating Milford Mill H.S. in 1964, Steve attended Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, later returning to Baltimore to work at WBAL radio as an entertainment news copy writer.
