Noel Paul Stookey was born in Baltimore on December 30, 1937. His family moved to Michigan when he was 12 years old. As a teenager he performed music as a solo and with local bands. At age 20 he took a job in New York City but soon went to playing music full time.
In 1961 while performing at The Gaslight in Greenwich Village he was introduced by Albert Grossman to Peter Yarrow and Mary Travers and they became known as Peter, Paul & Mary. The popular folk group performed and recorded together until 1970. They reunited in the late ’70s and toured together through 2009 when Mary passed away. Paul also worked as a solo performer. His biggest solo hit was “The Wedding Song (There is Love)” in 1971.
