Pink Floyd tribute band originated in Severn. Several Species came to life in 1996 when founding members Matt Zoll (drums), Chris Scholtes (guitar) and Bob Bartram (bass, vocals) re-grouped after serving together as the nucleus of three other Baltimore bands from many years past. Those bands were Hallowed Bane (speed metal), Europa (jazz/rock fusion) and Drastic Measures (progressive modern rock).
They took their name after the song “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in A Cave and Grooving with A Pict” from Pink Floyd’s 1969 album “Ummagumma.”
In 2009 the group consisted of the three original members as well as Marc Davis (lead vocals ex-Back to the Front), Seth Berkowitz (keyboards, guitar), George Gipe (guitars, keyboards, vocals ex- Whip the Cat, Rocket Science, 4 Miles, New Earth), Hollie Brogunier (vocals, 12 string guitar, percussion), Chris Charnigo (saxophone ex-Gettn’ Deep, This-n-That, Apollo 5, All the Way, Off Limits), Chuck Field (keyboards), Courtney Bittinger and Brandy Reese (backing vocals).
Locally Several Species performed regularly at Baltimore’s Pier 6 Concert Pavilion, Rams Head Live and the Recher Theatre, often as sold-out shows.
“Several Species – The Pink Floyd Experience is dedicated to faithfully performing material (sometimes an entire album front to back) from the 30+ year Pink Floyd catalogue. Several Species employs a quadraphonic surround sound system in every show that consists of directing sound from all 4 corners of a concert hall toward the center of the room, which envelopes the audience in the music and audio effects – an aural technique for which Pink Floyd is famous. Additionally, the band uses a 15′ diameter circular screen for the projection of moving pictures that are carefully synced to the music, enhancing the audio/visual experience of the performance. Numerous banks of intelligent and laser lighting also are used in the production of the show.”
