Barbershop quartet formed in early ‘50s by high school students, originally known as the Deacon Four. By 1958 the lineup became set with vocalists Fred King (baritone vocalist), Don Stratton (bass vocalist), Jim Grant (lead vocalist), and Bob Welzenbach (tenor vocalist).
Their 1970 performance at the Atlantic City International SPEBSQSA Convention won the International Championship. Their 1970 album featured the above lineup.
Grant later sang with Arcade. King, a 2004 inductee to the Barbershop Hall of Fame, also directed the Chorus of the Chesapeake mens barbershop chorus from Dundalk, a 1971 International championship winner, and directed the Dundalk chapter of the Sweet Adelines womens barbershop chorus, winners of multiple Regional championships. He was later a member of the Entertainers, and the international quartet finalist Pro’s ‘N’ Cons with his son Kevin King. Throughout the last half of his career, Fred became a Baltimore County Public School choral director, inspiring students at Parkville Jr. High School and Overlea High School.
